On August 5, 2010, rookie firefighters from all three of Trumbull's fire departments (Trumbull Center, Nichols FD, Long Hill Vol. Fire Dept.) began training to become State of Connecticut certified interior structural firefighters. Over the next four months, in this "Firefighter 1" class, the new firefighters will get extensive classroom and hands-on training evolutions on topics ranging from SCBA airpacks use, fighting fires, deploying hoselines, climbing ladders, ventilation, overhaul, and personal and crew safety. This program also includes training for Hazardous Material responses, as per the 2007 national standard for entry level firefighters. Over 20 different state certified fire instructors, as well as the Fairfield County HazMat Team, will lead these firefighters through the program. Questions? Contact Trumbull Car 11 at
