Trumbull family escapes fire

Updated: 11/16/2009 08:32:51 AM EST TRUMBULL -- A mother and her children escaped a house fire without injuries in Trumbull on Sunday night, a fire official said. A call came in reporting a kitchen fire about 9 p.m., said Chief Peter Rousso, of the all-volunteer Long Hill Fire Department. He said the family was already outside the 30 Country Lane home when crews responded.

Five engines, which are responsible for putting out the fire, and three trucks, which typically handle search-and-rescue operations, were dispatched to the scene. It took 50 firefighters about an hour to get the blaze under control, Rousso said. The 1 1/2-story home has significant smoke and fire damage, Rousso said, and the house is not inhabitable. But "I don't know the house will be a total loss," he said. He said he did not know whether a smoke alarm went off. The fire marshal was investigating the fire's cause, and units were still at the home as of 12:45 a.m. Monday, he said. Edison Road and Country Lane were closed during the incident, and they had not reopened as of early Monday, Rousso said. The American Red Cross was on the scene, and Rousso said he believed the family would be staying with neighbors. 17 Nov 2009 by rstritch print
