As we post, we realize our readers are not fire fighters! You may be reading some of our alarm reports and wondering what some things mean. Here is a beginning FAQ regarding the alarm reports.
TC = Trumbull Volunteer Fire Co.
LH = Long Hill Fire Department
N = Nichols Fire Department
Mutual Aid = Mutual aid is when departments go to help provide manpower and equipment to other departments. For example, Trumbull High School is in the Trumbull Center Fire District, so Trumbull Center is the primary department that responds there. However, because of the large size of the building, along with the life hazard, the other two departments in town will respond as well.
RIT = Rapid Intervention Team. When a structure fire is reported in town, the third department in town instead of providing manpower for firefighting, provides one or two apparatus as an RIT. RIT's specific role is for firefighter rescue. If any firefighter operating at the fire becomes lost, trapped, or hurt, the RIT team will immediately enter and rescue the trapped firefighter. While 9 times out of 10 they do not get "put to work", the importance of their job cannot be overlooked.
LH-1, LH-2, LH-3, LH-4 - These are the 4 chiefs in the Long Hill Fire Department. LH-1 is the chief, LH-2 is the deputy chief, LH-3 and LH-4 are assistant chiefs.
Nichols Car 1, 2, 3, Trumbull Car 1, 2, 3. These are the designations used for Nichols and Trumbull Center Chiefs, Deputy Chiefs, and assistant chiefs.
MVA - Motor vehicle accident
